Shape's work with young disabled people in youth settings goes back to the earliest days of the organisation in the 1970s, when Gina Levete MBE first founded the organisation. During the following decades we have developed a wide range of networks and relationships with practioners to support our work in this area. In recent times we ran the Big Lottery-funded Articulate project, which focussed on building confidence among employers and other agencies in providing opportunities for young learning disabled people interested in the arts and creative industries. We continue to work with disabled people under 30 years throughout our programme, and are delighted to have Big Lottery funding for our youth-centred project Inspiring Futures, which focusses on our support for young disabled people transitioning out of education and those beginning their careers in the arts and creative industries. Our work involves us using a variety of tools, including skills and artistic workshops, talks, placements and vocational guidance. To date we have worked in educational settings, arts venues and galleries, and are meeting with a number of high-profile cultural organisations to look at how the provision of entry-level positions for young disabled people is able to grow and be more open and supportive to them. We are also developing our Arts Award offer, and are grateful to Arts Award for their time and support in working with us. Above all, we want to help raise the aspirations of young disabled people who are contemplating their futures, and in helping them to formulate positive future plans, encourage wider arts and cultural engagement among young people.
