Shape Open Exhibition 2012 Call for Submissions

Shape in association with Westway Development Trust and our sponsors HSBC would like to invite applications for the Shape Open from artists who have work that comments or makes reference to issues surrounding ideas of disability or its definition as below:

  1. Lack of ability (to discharge any office or function); inability, incapacity; weakness.
  2. An instance of lack of ability. Chiefly in pl. Now rare.
  3. A physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities; (as a mass noun) the fact or state of having such a condition.
  4. Incapacity in the eye of the law, or created by the law; a restriction framed to prevent any person or class of persons from sharing in duties or privileges which would otherwise be open to them; legal disqualification.

Submission deadline: Monday 19th March 2012

Theme: Work related to any definition or meaning of disability

Venue: Portobello Gallery, 6 Thorpe Close, W10 5XL

Fee: £10 for up to 2 pieces

Prizes:

Shape Open Prize of £500 - The Shape Open Prize will be given to the artist with the best work in show as selected by the selection committee

The People's Choice Award of £250 - Will go to the artist whose work has been most voted for by the people visiting the exhibition

Medium:

2D, small 3D pieces and video.

- 2D work no bigger that 100cm x 150cm, ready to hang

- 3D pieces no bigger than 150cm height, 60cm diameter

- Video work must be on DVD, or submitted as a video file .avi/.mov/.mp4, maximum running time of 15mins and be single channel suitable for a showreel.

Who can apply?

This is an open call to all artists. The exhibition will show work of disabled and non-disabled people chosen by the selection panel. We do ask you to disclose whether you are disabled or non-disabled to help with the selection process and ensure balance.

Submitting your work

  2. Pay the submission fee
  3. Submit a digital format or deliver work directly to the gallery for full details download this document

NB: Digital formats include: documentation of 2D and 3D work, photos or films.

Decisions:

The successful artists will be selected from an open submission on the strength of their work and how they fit within the theme and exhibition as a whole. We will notify successful applicants of our decision by Thursday 5th April 2012.
