Shape Artists Commissions – How to Make Your Commission Accessible

‘Shape Artists Commissions – How to Make Your Commission Accessible’, was an opportunity for us to capture and share learning from our experience of commissioning, supporting and finally showcasing the work of 4 disabled artists.
Kazzum perform Paper People at Trafalgar Square in September 2008
It brought together the 4 commissioned artists with mainstream arts organisations.  The evening began with Samual Dore’s film, which followed the 4 artists as they developed their work, and finally showcased the pieces at the Southbank Centre.

This was followed by some lively discussions between artists, and commissioning organisations about what worked well when working with disabled artists.

The evening could not have been more timely, with the imminent launch of ‘Unlimited’ – one of the Cultural Olympiad’s major projects and the largest ever programme of commissions for disabled artists anywhere in the world.

The report from the event will serve as a guide for anyone wanting to commission disabled artists.  We anticipate that this will be available within the next few weeks.  To receive a copy of the report or a DVD of Samual’s film, please contact Laura Cream – lcream@shapearts.org.uk

Special thanks to Michele Taylor for hosting the evening, the Southbank Centre, Samuel Dore, and of course Aaron Williamson, Liz Bentley, StopGAP Dance Company and Kazzum Theatre Company – the four winners of the Shape Artist Commissions.
