Deaf Arts
Shape has been going through big changes and organisational restructuring and we would like the opportunity to let you all know what is and will be happening in Deaf Arts. We are in the process of reviewing Deaf Arts and making improvements for the future. We at Shape aim to secure the strength of Deaf Arts which has seen the growth of deaf artists in various art forms.
We are in the process of developing some new projects and I wish to ask all deaf, hard of hearing, usher, deaf-blind, deafened, partially deaf artists and also deaf artists with other disabilities to contact us if:
• you are interested in becoming involved in any of our projects,
• want to share ideas for future projects,
• wish for some advice and guidance with your studies or work,
• are looking to find work as a freelancer
• or have access issues.
Please email us: deafarts@shapearts.org.uk or SMS on 0762 480 9145
Deaf Arts projects planned for the coming year include:-
1. DEAF ARTS DAY – we are looking for any deaf artists with an interesting art form to run workshops in schools. We will be running workshops in four areas of London to give deaf children a flavour of different art forms, to encourage them to participate in arts activities and see deaf artists as role models for their future!
There are other great projects happening at Shape for both deaf and disabled artists:-
3 Link-Up a new career development programme. We are looking for deaf artists of all art forms who have a lot of experience, either studying or have been employed or self-employed in their art work. You can receive free training, and then be paid to become a Mentor or Advice Guide to other up and coming deaf artists.
We are also looking for deaf people who wish to receive mentoring support, or advice and guidance to help you progress in your future career in the arts. Please contact us at deafarts@shapearts.org.uk for more information, and/or an application form.
4 Open the Door – Shape’s new campaign of deaf and disability equality training and access audit services. If you know of anyone whether in an organisation, venue, company or charity in the arts, cultural and leisure sectors that would need some deaf equality (awareness) training, then please get in touch with Geraldine on openthedoor@shapearts.org.uk
5 Shape Tickets – join London’s leading arts and entertainment booking service for deaf and disabled people for just £25. Enjoy discounted tickets, support getting to and from a wide range of arts events across London, and full venue access information. There are also plans for a deaf theatre interest group to have a get together to share views, make comments and have discussions about each show before seeing the performance. It would enable you to meet others, understand more about the show and meet to share thoughts and feedback. Interested? Then get in touch with us!
7 d-art – Shape is working with London Disability Arts Forum (LDAF) to create an online database of deaf and disabled people working in the arts, broadcasting and creative industries. This is an exiting project where industry professionals will be able to find you whatever your practice. Your entry on the database will include a CV-style profile and images and will enable you to promote your work to all the right people. If you are interested in participating in d-art please contact Catherine Hawes at cath@shapearts.org.uk for more information.
More projects are in development, so look out at our website or if you wish to be informed regularly, then send us your email address and we will put your name on our e-newsletter mailing list.
If there is anything above which you are interested in, please contact us to discuss – deafarts@shapearts.org.uk or SMS 0762 480 9145
