Background
Explore is a partnership project between engage, National Association for Gallery Education, and Shape. Eight galleries in England and Wales focussed on disabled and deaf people as audiences, participants and artists.
The galleries worked in cluster groups and aimed to develop more inclusive approaches; becoming more welcoming to disabled and deaf people.
Explore was made possible by a grant from The Sir Jules Thorn Charitable Trust through The Ann Rylands Special Project.
The Explore handbook is available from http://engage.org/publications for £10 (incl.UK P&P). It is also available from Laura at engage, email laura.cherry@engage.org or telephone +44 (0)20 7729 6695.
The final phase of Explore: disabled and deaf people engaging with galleries 2007-2008 concluded with the launch of the Explore handbook, a guide to help galleries become more accessible to disabled and deaf people.
This publication draws on the learning that has taken place over the past year of training for galleries and artists and participatory activities with disabled and deaf people.
With contributions from the disability, arts, and visual arts sectors, there are sections relevant to the various departments of your organisation. The handbook also features top tips throughout from a range of perspectives, and lists of contacts and resources to point you in the right direction. In essence, a set of very clear sign-posts.
engage and Shape are confident that the Explore handbook will be a very valuable tool for all galleries and museums, whatever your current standards of access.
engage members will receive a free copy of this publication in January 2009, and it will be available to purchase from engage.
