Carly Jayne is selected by Yinka Shonibare MBE RA as winning artist of Shape Open 2014

As well as having one of the most intriguing titles in the Shape calendar of events, the 'Open closing party' is also one of the most anticipated dates, with the winning artist being selected by Shape Open patron and Turner Prize nominee Yinka Shonibare MBE RA.

Last night, as the wine flowed and the nibbles (generously donated by Salty Dog crisps and Pig and Hay) were consumed at award-winning speed, the scene was set for the announcement not only of the judge’s choice winner, but also that of the People’s Choice Award.

"The Shape Open is becoming increasingly more popular," Shape CEO Tony Heaton noted. "It’s in its third year, and each year I think the work gets stronger and the ideas get better."

In his speech, Yinka spoke of the support Shape had given him from the very beginning of his career. "As a disabled young man, I finished at art college and I didn’t know where to turn," he explained. "Then I found out about Shape and then the rest is history – you know what happened since! Shape gave me a lot of confidence."

With the artists and guests full of anticipation, Yinka announced the results to be as follows:

Winner of Shape Open 2014
£1000 prize

Winner of the People’s Choice Award
£250 prize

Since the private view of ‘[In]Visible’ in October, visitors to the exhibition have been casting their vote in our gallery ballot box. The result was a tie, with the two joint winners receiving the same number of votes.

Lucy Hutson ‘Long Johns’                                            Jack Haslam ‘Label me Jack (just another animal)’

Lucy and Jack will each receive £125, half of the prize money.

It wasn't just the selected artists who were leaving the Shape Gallery as winners either, as a raffle was held as part of Christopher Sacre’s fundraising for Shape. In April, Shape Open 2013 exhibitor Christopher will cycle from London to Paris, and has raised over £700 so far - find out how to support Christopher by clicking here. The prizes up for grabs at the Open closing party raffle included sets of Christopher’s sculpture ‘babies’, a £50 meal voucher from The Real Greek, and a £50 experience day voucher. The raffle raised a fantastic amount of money towards Christopher's £1,450 target.

Thank you to everyone who joined us – the gallery was packed with both familiar and new faces!
