Zine Making Workshop with Hamja Ahsan

Drop in to make a zine with artist and activist Hamja Ahsan and take home your own work of art. Hamja will be assisted by Kay Stephens of daikon zine.

Visitors can make a zine in response to artists, works, and themes of Shape’s programme 'FLUX/US' or in the Tate collection.

A selection of zines from the Shape Arts Zine Library is on display to draw inspiration from.

Hamja Ahsan is an artist, writer, activist and curator based in London. He is author of the book Shy Radicals: Antisystemic Politics of the Militant Introvert. He is founder and co-curator the DIY Cultures festival of creative activism, zines and independent publishing since 2013. He was shorlisted for the Liberty human rights award for Free Talha Ahsan campaign on extradition and detention without trial under the War on Terror. His recent writing was anthologised in 'No Colour Bar: Black Art in Action 1960-1990'.

He has presented art projects at PS1 MOMA New York, Tate Modern, Gwangju Biennale, Guild Gallery New York, Shaanakht festival Pakistan and Shlipa Academy, Bangladesh. His practice encompasses all media: conceptual writing, building archives, performance, video, sound and making zines. He is currently working on project on the role of zines in the Hillsborough Justice campaign, Britain largest police cover up. He was selected to be part of Ljubljana biennial 2019.

Kay Stephens is an activist and co-editor of daikon zine. daikon is a zine for sharing the experiences of South-East & East Asian women/all trans people in the diaspora, toward a wider platform of intersectional solidarity.
