How does Gift Aid work? Expand If you are a UK taxpayer you can increase the value of your gift to Shape, at no extra cost to you, by signing a Gift Aid declaration. With your permission, this allows us to claim back an extra 25p for every £1 you donate.
How is Shape funded? Expand Shape relies on a range of sources of income including the generous support of trusts and individuals who are passionate about our cause. As a National Portfolio organisation Shape we have also been supported by Arts Council England for many years. In the current economic climate we are faced with increased pressure on our resources. Your donation is more important than ever.
Tony Heaton OBE Chair Expand I was the Chief Executive of Shape Arts from 2008-2017 before stepping down in order to pursue my own projects and consultancy work within the sector, and to become Shape's Chair. Prior to Shape, from 1997-2007, I was the Director of Holton Lee, a 350 acre campus with short stay residential facilities for Disabled people. During this time I led on a 10 year strategic plan and the commissioning and development of the award-winning Faith House Gallery and the Stables Studios. Initiator of the NDACA (the National Disability Arts Collection and Archive), I am also a sculptor (www.tonyheaton.co.uk) and have had a long involvement within the disability arts movement, first exhibiting in 'Out of Ourselves' in 1990, with fellow disabled sculptor Adam Reynolds. My link to Shape goes back to 1986 when working as an artist, and then as Chair (1989-1994) of North West Shape, involved in the transition of the organisation into Full Circle Arts. Little known fact: I used to be an independent record retailer but failed to follow the career path of Richard Branson. I did though manage to sell ace bass player (walk on the wild side) Herbie Flowers a copy of Plant Life, one of his own records!
David Hevey Chief Executive Expand I became Chief Executive of Shape Arts in April 2017. I am a media, arts and heritage professional delivering projects for much of the UK cultural landscape, including the BBC, Arts Council England and the Heritage Lottery Fund. Prior to becoming CEO, I was working for Shape as Project Director on the £1M HLF / ACE funded National Disability Arts Collection and Archive (NDACA), which went live in 2018.
Jeff Rowlings Head of Programme Expand I have worked across a range of arts disciplines for over twenty years, including five years running a music & performance venue and gallery, and over ten years at Shape. I oversee our NPO programme as a whole, ensuring we are delivering across artistic, learning and development areas, so that disabled and marginalised creatives are fully supported, and that disabled people can enjoy, take part, and lead in the arts and cultural spaces. Outside of work I have a practice as a writer. We are always seeking to improve our ways of working, and looking for innovative partnerships that work towards greater inclusion - to get in touch with me to discuss ideas or proposals, or to find out more about what we do, please contact [email protected].

Visual Arts Links Expand Could you help? Bow Arts, an educational arts charity based in east London, has been offered a one-off opportunity to create new affordable artist studios in an inspiring and historic grade II listed warehouse. The 30 new studios (raising the total number from 60 to 90) comes at a crucial time when young artists are increasingly being pushed out of the city by rising rent prices. They are hoping to reach a target of £50,000 through crowdfunding, and have until the 17 April to do so. Dating of entries Expand Dates are given as exactly as possible, and events are ordered by year and month. I have sometimes guessed the month where it is possible to do so with reasonable accuracy (for example when an event has been reviewed but no date given). Where no date is given, it should not be assumed that the date is entirely accurate. An exact date indicates that the date of the event is known (with a very few exceptions, where I have noted the fact in italics). Where only the year is known, items are placed at the start of the relevant year. Such events are likely to have occurred later than at least some of the items placed subsequently with a specific date. I would welcome information that would enable me to place these items more accurately. Events that occurred over more than one month are normally given under the start month.
Thanks Expand I am extremely grateful to the staff of DAIL, and Victoria Lucas in particular, for all the help they have given me in sorting out a set of the magazine, and to the other staff of LDAF for putting up with my intrusions into their office while I ferreted around the boxes of back copies. I would also like to offer thanks to all the individuals who have donated or lent copies of DAIL and DAM, trusting me with treasured possessions: Ann Young, Sian Williams, Joe Bidder, Hilary Porter, Geof Armstrong. Thanks are also due to all the organisations who responded to my request for information about their history: The Art House, Full Body and the Voice Art + Power, CandoCo, Blue Eyed Soul, DASh, Oily Cart (To hard-pressed organisations who meant to reply but had trouble finding the time, I would emphasise: it's not too late - there will be updated editions.)I would like to thank those individuals who have answered my queries about past events in which they were involved: Chris Ledger, Tony Heaton, Colin Hambrook. And I owe particular thanks to all the various editors of DAIL and DAM, whose work over the years put on record most of the information contained here: Elspeth Morrison, Diane Miller, Kit Wells, Ruth Bailey, Colin Hambrook, Matthew Holmes, Joe McConnell, Hanne Olsen and Catya Wheatley for DAIL; Roland Humphries and Kit Wells for DAM.
Technical notes Expand I have tried to minimise the use of intrusive quote marks. It should therefore be remembered that the language used in this chronology often reflects the phrasing of an original announcement or review rather than current modern practice. I have tended to retain such phrasing because it gives a flavour of the ethos of a particular organisation or event at a particular time. Similarly, I have, as far as possible, respected the convention that the capitalised term Deaf refers to sign language users, who see themselves as primarily part of a linguistic community, whereas the lowercase deaf refers to any people with hearing loss, but have often retained descriptions of events that do not employ this usage. A significant role in disability arts has been played by certain aspects of Deaf arts, such as sign song, and Deaf performers such as Dorothy Miles and Caroline Parker, and I have tried to document that. But this chronology does not attempt to provide complete coverage of Deaf arts. That would need to be done by a Deaf researcher with considerably better knowledge of the area than I possess. Where possible, I have cross-checked announcements with subsequent reviews, features and news reports. Nevertheless, it remains the case that this chronology relies heavily on unconfirmed announcements. It is inevitable that there will sometimes have been last-minute changes, and that some of the information given here is inaccurate. I would welcome corrections.
How long are the training sessions? Expand We always recommend one full day (up to 7 hours) for each training module, particularly if you are new to the subject. We occasionally do half days (up to 3.5 hours) but these are generally best for refresher sessions only. Training generally runs from 10am. Timings are flexible and are usually agreed betweenyou and your Shape contact. Where possible, we also provide training on weekends and in the evenings ifrequired (where and when a trainer is available). Back to Audits and Training
What will the training cover? Expand To make sure your staff receive training in the areas most relevant to them, training may include:• Equality Training• Disability Equality• Working with Disabled Staff and Volunteers• Accessible Events Management• Audience Development Training• Achieving Customer Service Excellence.….or a combination of all of the above, plus access or equality related inspired issues that you talk to us about during the initial consultation. Your Shape trainer will contact you directly to discuss the content, schedule and any specific requirements. We’re always happy to discuss any options or ideas you may have about delivery and content. Back to Audits and Training
What does the final report include? Expand A typical report might describe each building element sequentially, how they affect people with particular impairments, and to what extent they fall short of the agreed access criteria. Recommendations might then be made for remedial action and that action awarded a priority rating. The final report of a full access audit should provide the information you need to draw up an effective Access Action Plan’ in which access improvements, staff training and a revision of relevant policies, practices and procedures can be timetabled. The order in which recommendations are acted upon will depend in the first instance upon the priority they are given in the report, if for instance the present situation constitutes a hazard.
Shape trainer profiles Expand Use the links below to find out more about the trainers who work with us.Nick Goss - Shape Trainer and Auditor David Owen - Shape Trainer and Auditor Agnes Fletcher - Shape Trainer and Auditor Peter Quinn - Shape Trainer and Auditor Jessica Corby - Shape Trainer and Auditor Back to Audits and Training
How many people can be trained at once? Expand We recommend that no more than 15 people be trained at a full day. This ensures the training is a hands-on experience for all staff. Feedback from recent Shape Training sessions has indicated that more than 20 people in a training session makes it difficult to cover the necessary material to fully educate staff and leave enough time for discussion, which is an integral part to Shape learning. If you wish for more delegates to be trained with the same group, there is a small fee for each extra participant.
How much does it cost? Expand In general it can be assumed that if a survey takes a day to complete, it will take the assessor/auditor a further day to produce a report; two days in total. Please contact us for pricing information. Other costs include any travel expenses for the auditor, lunch and accommodation (if required). This includes any initial consultation to make sure the auditing is tailored to your needs.
What can Shape offer you? Expand Shape can tailor a package to meet your needs. Our services include: • Help developing your brief • Walking and talking you through your services and premises • Confidential one-to-one consultation sessions • Training you in access auditing methodology • Give you information on the Equality Act 2010its regulations and Codes of Practice • Undertaking a comprehensive access audit for you • Undertaking a feasibility report • Appraising architectural drawings and proposals for change • Preparing reports for you and/or your funders • Delivering disability access and equalities training (basic to specialist)
Why should I choose Shape? Expand Shape is a disability-led arts organisation working to improve access to culture for disabled people. We develop opportunities for disabled artists, we train cultural institutions to be more open to disabled people, and we run participatory arts and development programmes. Shape has gained its reputation as a sector leader and subject matter expert through its innovative approach to inclusion, equality, and access. With over 35 years' experience, today Shape continues to produce innovative projects and improve accessibility and inclusion within the arts, cultural and leisure sectors.
Is there any follow-up done by Shape? Expand Access auditing should not be a one-off exercise; it should be part of an evolving plan or strategy which is continually monitored. At Shape we follow up all our auditing with evaluation feedback for the client. Due to the unique way that Shape also works with disabled audiences, after auditing with us we may be able to bring audiences to your venue or public spaces to experience first-hand how the improvements have helped their access and staff skills; and feedback those experiences to you. Shape also offer support packages for venues and organisations of any scale which includes telephone advice surgeries, email support, and mystery shopping feedback. This is part of Shape's holistic approach to supporting arts and cultural venues and organisations.
Does Shape do auditing outside London? Expand Yes. Shape is based in London but does cover areas outside of London. Please contact us to discuss. Thereafter, it is usually recommended that physical improvements be undertaken in logical sequence (a sequential journey similar to that followed by the audit) as building users experience them. Nonetheless, some improvements can be incorporated into regular maintenance programmes or might be implemented as a specific project.
Who will be your auditor? Expand Shape works with a group of disabled professional trainers and access auditors who are experts in the field of arts, access, disability and equality. Our assessors and auditors have extensive experience working with and for disability and arts organisations; they are familiar with contemporary best practice in Inclusive Design.
What needs to happen before an audit takes place? Expand We will send you a pre-audit questionnaire in order to understand your brief, what is expected from us, where your organisation is in terms of access and what type of access service is required. Once we receive this we will then send it back to with the contract details. You need to know why you want an access audit and we ask you to consider the following things: • On your brief, please clarify: how you work, your objectives, capacity or priorities • Advise us if you want a detailed technical report or an overview report • Your budget. To be sure that you obtain the service you require, you will need to explain to the auditor/assessor: • Periods and patterns of use and any changes planned • Management responsibilities • Planned maintenance programmes • Alterations or extensions proposed. We will also need to discuss and agree the: • Access criteria to which you expect the audit to refer (this may be dictated by funders) • Consultation with users • Report format • Timescale and fees
Why audit? Expand An access audit is essentially a survey of premises and their management in terms of their accessibility to all people including disabled people. In isolation an access audit does not achieve anything: what matters is what follows, what action you take and to what effect. Shape considers an access audit to be just one part of a progressive cycle of events that together will enable you to extend your services, facilities, and employment opportunities to all.
What happens next? Expand Shape provides a certified training programme and access support packages to keep participants engaged and stimulated to gain confidence in addressing access issues. Our training programme is designed to provide regular and ongoing support to organisations of any scale, to ensure they are achieving their goals, and are able to achieve and demonstrate inclusive customer service excellence. We build close relationships with our clients and focus on long-term collaborative action, so that we can work together in building a more inclusive arts and cultural sector. After you train with Shape, we will work with you to identify any further training or access support you may require to help you develop your audience, diversify your income and improve your overall access, to ensure that everyone will be able to access your facilities and activities safely, comfortably and confidently. This may include providing a rolling programme of annual training services, inclusion actionplanning, telephone advice surgeries, email support and access consultancy
