In Circles

6- 19 September 2019
Nunnery Gallery, Bow Road

The Shape Open 2019 exhibition, supported by Shape Open Patron Yinka Shonibare CBE, showcased artwork from both disabled and non-disabled artists, responding to the theme "In Circles".

It aimed to question whether progress for disabled artists is being made. Is our work counterproductive? Can we really shift institutional thinking? Or, are we simply going round in circles?

Winner 2019, chosen by Yinka Shonibare CBE

This year's winning artist was Catriona Faulkner, whose entry explored the cyclical nature of chronic illness and medication.

"It is an honour to be chosen from such a talented and inspiring group of artists," said Catriona. "I hope our work and experiences can ignite conversations and expose disabled artists and their work to a wider audience." Catriona's work was selected by a panel of judges including Yinka Shonibare, for which she was awarded £1000 prize money.

People's Choice Award

Visitors to the exhibition also got to vote on their favourite work, choosing Jack Haslam as the winner of the People's Choice Award.

"My piece of Work 'Love You Cat' is a very personal response to the theme," said Jack. "Told through embroidery, its the story of my life at home with my mum and medication. I hope people found it funny but I hope it also makes people question how they manage their own conflicting emotions and dependancy in their own lives." Jack plans to spend his £250 prize money on trying out 3D digital model making.
