Frequently asked questions relating to submitting work to the Shape Open...

Do you have to be disabled to submit artwork to the Open?

No, the Shape Open is an exhibition of artwork by both disabled and non-disabled artists created in response to a disability-centred theme.

Do I have to be from the United Kingdom to submit artwork?

No, we can select and exhibit work from international artists.

I submitted artwork to or showed artwork in a previous Shape Open. Can I submit again this year?

Yes, and we most definitely encourage you to! You can submit up to two pieces of work per application.

How should I present my 2D and 3D work?

Please send us clear, high-resolution, professional photographs of the work. Bear in mind that submitted images should be as high-quality as possible as, if the work is selected, we will use these images for the exhibition catalogue.

When photographing your work you should make sure you have aligned the camera straight on and that the artwork is well-lit, as to show it as accurately as possible. Avoid using camera flash if possible, try to take photographs of the work on a plain white backdrop, and allow the work to fill the image. Please title images with your name and the name of the work.

Do I have to write anything or explain my work?

We ask for an artist statement, which is to understand how your work fits within the context of the exhibition theme. We suggest you write about yourself and your work in third person (your name / "the artist(s)" / "he/she/they", rather than "I" and "me") so we understand what you do and can present your work properly.

Can I go back and edit my submission?

Yes, our 'Save & Return' feature on the submission form allows artist to register an account / log in to fill out the form, then return later to update and/or complete their submission.

Do I have to pay to apply for the Shape Open?

No. We do ask that you make a voluntary donation to Shape, however we also understand the financial pressures on artists and so run a 'pay what you can' donation for your submission (or you can opt out entirely). The amount donated will not affect your application.
