Oliver MacDonald was the recipient of the 2017 Adam Reynolds Memorial Bursary.

His residency took place from February to April 2017 at Turner Contemporary, Margate.

Traditionally trained as a willow weaver, Oliver spent his residency exploring basket-weaving and its materials through a conceptual lens, creating large-scale, performative objects and installations on-site. For three months he used his research and material knowledge, alongside local history and environment, as a platform for creating willow artworks to convey intersecting ideas of tradition, obsolescence, occupational therapy and the physicality of making.

Oliver also led informal sessions with the gallery’s regular learning groups, ran willow weaving workshops and worked on a basketry piece. Find out more about this on our blog: Five Minutes with Oliver MacDonald
