Artist statement: Dylan Esposito is a Glasgow-based artist whose sculptural works often take the form of utilitarian objects that have been rendered unfit for purpose, playing with ideas of functionality & normalcy. He uses humour to subvert negative stereotypes of neurodivergence being something negative or needing 'fixed'. He is particularly interested in sculpture's capability to engage with various audiences of all abilities & identities through our different senses. Dylan hosted casting and sensory-focused workshops during his residency at Mount Stuart (2023/24). Shaped by suggestions from local islanders, his permanent installation Without Words (2024) is a collection of cast textures gathered from across the Isle of Bute. In 2022, he was commissioned by Sustrans to create a large-scale public sculpture for 'Disability History Month'. He focused his research on Hugh Blair, who is said to be the first documented autistic person in Scotland, with all accounts of him written from the medical model of disability. Through inviting participation from the wider autistic community, the project aimed to reframe Blair in a positive light as an autistic person of Scottish historical significance, as well as portraying autism from a contemporary, first-hand perspective. The form & material of the sculpture took direct influence from Blair’s special interest in Dry Stone Walls, and the visual & tactile elements acted as alternative means of communication for people who may not use verbal or written language.
