Artist Statement

Katherine Araniello is a London-based performance and video artist, who uses subversive humour in response to the mundane, social awkwardness and the negative representation of disability. She twists impossible tasks, taboos and the everyday into works which are never quite as they seem and are constantly challenging notions of ability. No-one is exempt and everyone is under scrutiny. She self-initiates and there are no limits to the stunts she pulls off to make art. Araniello uses improvisation, interaction and the use of technology to create unpredictable scenarios that can range from film works and large scale productions to DIY performances and collaborations. Araniello has been commissioned by Live Art Development Agency to devise and facilitate two ‘DIY’ workshops, entitled ‘I Can’t Dance’ (2015) and ‘Playing the Victim’ (2016).

Araniello also works under a number of guises, including as SickBitchCrips (SBC), a persona that allows her to present disability in outrageous and politically incorrect ways, provoking audiences to reassess their own notions of disability in contemporary society. She also works with Aaron Williamson as The Disabled Avant-Garde (DAG), a satirical arts organisation, creating pitch-black and self-knowing performances, videos and interventions.
